Which construction dumpster size fits my job's debris?
A 20- or 30-yard construction dumpster fits bulky, lighter debris like framing lumber, drywall and packaging. A 10- or 15-yard fits heavy debris like concrete, brick and dirt, loaded no more than halfway up the walls. Match the bin to the heaviest material on site, not just the volume.
| Size | Outside size (L × W × H) | Included tons | Typical job-site use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-yard | 12' × 8' × 3.5' | 2 | Heavy debris to the halfway line; small demo |
| 15-yard | 16' × 7.5' × 4.5' | 2.5 | Heavy debris to the halfway line; mixed small-job debris |
| 20-yard | 22' × 8' × 4' | 3 | Framing, drywall, interior demo |
| 30-yard | 22' × 8' × 6' | 4 | Bulky new-build and large demo debris |
| 40-yard | 22' × 7.5' × 8' | 5–6 | Major demolition, new construction, large commercial jobs |
Uses are labeled typical. All sizes include 7 days. Compare sizes in the dumpster size guide.

Call now (281) 673-4344How do swaps work on a construction dumpster?
A construction dumpster swap is a new standard rental. The full can is hauled and weighed, and an empty one is set in its place with a fresh 7 days and fresh included tons. Each load gets its own scale ticket, so you can see what every haul weighed.
Call when the can is close to full, not after it's over the rim. An overfilled can can't legally be hauled; the $125 dry-run fee applies and your crew removes the excess. Extra days past 7 are $25 per day if you just need more time to fill.
Can I get dumpsters on more than one job site?
Multiple construction sites can each get their own dumpster. Every site is its own rental with its own 7 days, included tons, scale ticket and invoice. Book by 3:00 PM for next-day delivery between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Give each site's address, gate details and the drop spot when you call.
Your crew doesn't need to meet the truck if the spot is clear. The driver texts or calls 20–30 minutes before arrival. Locked gates, blocked access or low wires cause a $125 dry-run fee. Billing is per rental at the rates above; ask about payment terms when you call.
How is the weight of construction debris billed?
Construction debris over the included tons is billed at $75 per ton, pro-rata by the exact pound from the landfill's digital scale ticket. A 20-yard includes 3 tons. If the ticket shows 3.4 tons net, you pay for 0.4 tons, which is $30. The ticket copy comes with the final invoice.
The final invoice is emailed 3–5 business days after pickup. Concrete weighs about 150 lb per cubic foot, so heavy loads hit the limit long before the can looks full. Read how dumpster weight is billed and the concrete and dirt dumpster rules.
Do asbestos and lead paint rules affect my debris?
The EPA asbestos NESHAP rule, 40 CFR 61.145, sets inspection and advance-notice steps before covered demolition and renovation. The EPA lead RRP rule, 40 CFR 745 Subpart E, requires lead-safe work practices from paid renovators in pre-1978 homes. Test suspect material before it goes in a dumpster.
The law: covered projects follow NESHAP inspection and notice steps, and certified renovators follow RRP work practices in pre-1978 housing and child-occupied facilities. Our advice: call before loading any material you suspect contains asbestos. Confirm with your permit office, HOA or landfill.
When does a construction site need a debris chute?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.252(a) requires an enclosed chute when material is dropped more than 20 feet to any point outside the building's exterior walls. Upper floors of multi-story work usually hit this limit. Set the dumpster where the chute can feed straight into it without the truck losing access.
Keep hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries out of every can. Tires and freon appliances are $50 extra per item. The full list is in what you can put in a dumpster.
