Putting a Dumpster on Your Driveway
A roll-off dumpster usually sits on your driveway, with wooden boards under the rails to protect concrete and asphalt. The truck typically needs about 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance. Street placement usually needs city right-of-way approval. You don't need to be home if the spot is clear.

How much driveway space does a dumpster need?
A dumpster needs a flat spot as long and wide as its footprint, plus truck room. The 20- and 30-yard dumpsters are 22 feet long and 8 feet wide. The truck typically needs about 60 feet of straight approach and about 23 feet of overhead clearance to tilt the container off.
| Size | Length | Width | Height |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-yard | 12 ft | 8 ft | 3.5 ft |
| 15-yard | 16 ft | 7.5 ft | 4.5 ft |
| 20-yard | 22 ft | 8 ft | 4 ft |
| 30-yard | 22 ft | 8 ft | 6 ft |
| 40-yard | 22 ft | 7.5 ft | 8 ft |
The 60-foot approach and 23-foot clearance are typical figures for roll-off trucks, not exact limits. Look up before you pick a spot: power lines, cable lines and low branches all count. If your spot is tight, describe it when you call. A smaller size may fit where a larger one won't. Compare footprints in the dumpster size guide.

Wooden boards go under the dumpster's rails and rollers on concrete and asphalt driveways. The boards spread the weight and keep steel off the surface. Heavy loads still press hard, so keep concrete, dirt and brick in the 10- or 15-yard sizes, loaded no more than halfway up the walls.
Your choices matter too:
- Keep the dumpster off new concrete. Ask your concrete installer when the slab can carry heavy loads.
- Avoid cracked or crumbling edges where possible.
- Hot asphalt is softer than cool asphalt. Mention an asphalt drive when you book.
Weight also affects your bill. See how dumpster weight is billed before loading heavy material.
Where should I not put a dumpster?
Never place a dumpster over septic lids, sprinkler heads, soft lawn or new concrete. A loaded dumpster can crack a septic lid, crush sprinkler heads and sink into wet grass. Keep the spot clear of utility boxes and meters. Mark septic and sprinkler locations before delivery so the driver can avoid them.
Soft ground is a real risk on the Gulf Coast after heavy rain. A truck can rut a wet yard, and a dumpster can settle unevenly. A paved driveway or pad is the safer choice.
Can I put a dumpster on the street?
Street placement usually needs city right-of-way approval before the dumpster arrives. The street, curb and sidewalk belong to the city, not the homeowner. Each city sets its own process. Check the rule first, because a dumpster placed without approval can lead to problems you will have to fix.
Ask about your city's rule when you book. Outside Baytown, call your city's public works office before asking for street placement. Confirm with your permit office, HOA or landfill before delivery day.
Does my HOA allow a dumpster in the driveway?
HOA rules can limit how many days a dumpster stays or require it to be screened from view. Some HOAs ask for notice before delivery. Read your deed restrictions or call the HOA manager before you book. Knowing the limit helps you plan your 7-day rental and avoid a violation letter.
If your HOA caps the stay, plan around it. Have your crew ready on delivery day and book pickup as soon as the work wraps up.
What is a dry run fee?
A dry run fee of $125 applies when the truck arrives but can't place or pick up the dumpster. Common causes are a blocked driveway, low wires and locked gates. A dumpster loaded above its top rim also can't legally be hauled, so the dry run fee applies and the excess must come out.
Avoid a dry run on delivery day:
- Move cars, trailers and boats off the spot the night before.
- Unlock gates or tell us the code.
- Check the spot for low wires and branches.
- Load level with the top rim, never above it. Our dumpster loading guide shows how.
Do I need to be home for dumpster delivery?
You don't need to be home for delivery if the spot is clear and easy to find. Delivery runs 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The driver texts or calls 20 to 30 minutes before arrival. Mark the spot with chalk, cones or a note so the dumpster lands where you want it.
Book by 3:00 PM for next-day delivery. Same-day requests carry a $50 rush fee and depend on an open truck. Questions about timing? See the rental terms.
