How to Load a Roll-Off Dumpster the Right Way

Load a dumpster with heavy, flat items on the floor first, spread evenly, then fill the gaps with smaller debris. Stop when debris is level with the top rim; that rim is the fill line. Concrete, dirt, brick and sand go only in 10- or 15-yard dumpsters, loaded no more than halfway up the walls.

What order should I load a dumpster in?

Load a dumpster in four layers: heavy flat items on the floor, bulky items next, then loose debris in the gaps, and light bags on top. Spread weight from front to back instead of piling it at one end. Breaking furniture down first can free up several feet of space.

  1. Floor first: Lay heavy, flat items like plywood, doors and old cabinets across the floor.
  2. Break it down: Take legs off tables, remove cushions and cut long boards so they lie flat.
  3. Bulky items next: Set dressers, couches and appliances without freon in tight rows, open side up.
  4. Fill the gaps: Push drywall pieces, branches and loose debris into the spaces between items.
  5. Bags on top: Finish with bagged trash and light debris, keeping the top level.

Freon appliances, mattresses and tires add $50 each. Hazardous chemicals, wet paint and batteries can't go in. See what you can put in a dumpster.

Where is the fill line on a dumpster?

The fill line on a dumpster is the top rim of the walls. Debris must sit level with that rim, with nothing sticking up above it, including boards, pipes or branches. A load that passes the fill line can't be hauled until the extra debris comes out, and that trip costs a dry-run fee.

A simple check: lay a long board across the top of the dumpster. If debris pushes the board up anywhere, take some out. Heavy debris has its own lower limit, covered next.

How high can I load concrete, dirt or brick in a dumpster?

Concrete, dirt, brick and sand can be loaded no more than halfway up the walls, and only in a 10- or 15-yard dumpster. The halfway rule protects the truck and keeps your load near its included tons. Keep heavy loads clean and unmixed; a clean load qualifies for clean-fill pricing.

Normal-weight concrete weighs about 150 lb per cubic foot. A dumpster can hit its weight limit when it looks mostly empty. Read how dumpster weight is billed for the overage math, or see the concrete and dirt dumpster page.

What happens if my dumpster is overfilled?

An overfilled dumpster can't be legally hauled, so the driver leaves it in place. The $125 dry-run fee applies, and you remove debris until the load is level with the top rim. Loads on Texas roads must be secured so nothing falls or blows off. Debris above the rim can't be secured.

Once the load is back at the fill line, call to set a new pickup. If you are running out of room before the job is done, a swap costs a new standard rental at your quoted flat rate. That is often a better plan than an overfilled load and a dry run. Compare the options on the dumpster rental cost guide.

How do I use the dumpster door?

Use the dumpster door to walk in heavy or awkward items and wheelbarrow loads instead of lifting them over the wall. Load the far end first so you don't block the door. Close and latch the door before pickup so the load stays inside on the road.

The door is heavy. Open it fully and keep hands clear of the hinge side. Don't stack debris against the inside of the door, or it may swing open on its own when unlatched.

Should I cover my dumpster with a tarp?

A tarp on your dumpster keeps rain out, and wet debris weighs more on the landfill scale. A tarp also keeps light debris from blowing out and makes the dumpster less tempting to neighbors. Tie the tarp to the sides, and fold it off on pickup day so the load can be checked.

A tarp does not raise the fill line. Debris under the tarp still has to sit level with the top rim.

How do I keep neighbors from filling my dumpster?

Keep neighbors from filling your dumpster by covering the load with a tarp, placing the dumpster where you can see it and asking nearby neighbors not to use it. Every pound on the scale ticket is billed to you, and a dropped-off mattress, tire or freon appliance adds $50 each.

Banned items left by someone else, like paint or batteries, still have to come out before pickup. A quick look inside each evening catches problems early. For space and placement choices, see dumpster placement on a driveway.

Can I drop debris into a dumpster from an upper floor?

On construction work, OSHA 29 CFR 1926.252(a) requires an enclosed chute when material is dropped more than 20 ft outside the exterior walls. That is what the law requires on job sites. We recommend carrying debris down at any height when people, cars or windows are near the dumpster.

Confirm with your permit office, HOA or landfill for rules that apply to your job.

Common questions

Can I pile debris above the rim and cover it with a tarp?
A tarp doesn't change the fill line. Debris under the tarp must still sit level with the top rim, or the $125 dry-run fee applies.
What if I tossed a paint can or battery in by mistake?
Take it out before pickup. Wet paint, batteries and hazardous chemicals are prohibited; your local household hazardous waste program takes them.
Is it worth taking furniture apart before loading?
Taking furniture apart lets pieces lie flat and fill gaps. Bulky items left whole trap empty space, which can push you toward a swap sooner.
Can I climb into the dumpster to pack debris down?
We recommend packing debris from outside the dumpster or through the door. Loose debris shifts underfoot and sharp edges are hard to see.
Can I leave the door open overnight while I work?
Close and latch the door when you stop for the day. An open door invites people to toss in debris, and the door must be latched before pickup.
